Email with your questions about finishing and
restoring your antiques. We will post them here.
Q. Where can I get my caned
chair repaired and is it worth it to do it?
A. Your questions are ones we
hear often at the Gristmill.
First, the Gristmill will be glad to take a
look at it and give you an estimate. The estimate
will be based on whether it is a hand caned
chair seat or an inset one-piece seat. Check
the underside. If there are cane ends underneath
you have the first style.
Second, is it worth it? The answer lies with
you. If the chair is part of a set that came
down in the family and has sentimental value
then yes it is worth it. If you bought it at
a garage sale for $5 bucks and hoped to do it
your self and have had it for years in the basement
and you are tired of moving it around and the
thought of spending upwards of $100 doesn’t
appeal to you, then probably not! There are
other ways to make it a usable chair.
Q. How can I remove the water
deposit stains on some of my clear vases and
bottles? A. Use denture tablets.
